Elon Musk is pivoting away from simple “upgraded DMs” to launch a standalone communication platform: XChat. Scheduled for a global release this Friday, April 17, XChat is now listed on the App Store for pre-order.
Why XChat is Different from Standard X DMs
While Musk initially planned to upgrade the existing X direct messaging system in 2025, XChat represents a “whole new architecture.” It isn’t just an update; it’s a dedicated environment built for privacy and cross-device synchronization.
Key Security & Privacy Features:
Zero-Tracking Policy: Unlike mainstream social apps, the App Store listing confirms XChat will have no ads and will not track user data.
Screenshot Protection: A major win for privacy—users can actively block participants from taking screenshots of conversations.
Burn-on-Read Messages: A new “disappearing message” mode automatically wipes texts 5 minutes after they are sent.
End-to-End Encryption: Full encryption is standard, alongside the ability to edit or delete messages for everyone in the chat.
The Verdict for Professionals
With support for massive group chats (up to 481 members), XChat is clearly targeting the space currently held by Telegram and Signal. For creators and journalists, the “Your encrypted chats deserve their own app” marketing suggests a move toward high-security professional communication.
